The 2019 progressive takeover leading to the first Democratic trifecta in 25 years was a direct result of Virginia power builders organizing new, Democratic voters over several cycles. Virginia offers a replicable model for how Southern states undergoing demographic shifts can build a new electorate—through multiracial coalition building, new voter registration and mobilization, and offering a vision for governance that helps people. Virginia is also a reminder that Southern states are steeped in racist pasts, and it’s time to give way to new leadership. Winning elections is just the beginning. The real work is to organize big ideas and people to change policies.
